Roof insurance claims in Meridian, documented the way adjusters want

A claim goes well when the damage is documented before anyone files, the adjuster sees the same photos you do, and the roof is built to the scope that gets approved. That's the whole job.

Insurance adjuster and roofing contractor reviewing roof damage photos on a tablet on a shingle roof in Idaho

Idaho homeowner policies cover sudden storm damage — hail, wind, a fallen limb, the weight of ice and snow — and don't cover wear, neglect or a roof that simply reached the end of its life. Most of the friction in a Treasure Valley roof claim comes from the gray zone between those: a 2005 three-tab roof with a year-old hail bruise on every slope is both. The way through is documentation that separates the storm damage from the age, and that has to happen before the claim is filed, not after the adjuster has already written it up as 'wear.'

So we inspect first: chalked test squares on every slope, hit counts, dated photos, the soft-metal damage on gutters and vents that confirms hail, and a storm report tying it to a date. You file with your carrier — we never file for you or take an assignment of your benefits. When the adjuster comes, we're on the roof with them, walking the same squares. If the claim is approved, we build to the approved scope, invoice your carrier's numbers, and you pay your deductible — and only your deductible. Idaho Code 41-348 makes it unlawful for a contractor to make a practice of waiving, rebating or paying any part of it, and the Idaho Department of Insurance lists deductible 'waivers' as its first red flag for a bad roofer. Anyone offering is telling you how they do business.

Questions we get about roof insurance claims

Should I file a claim for a small repair?

Usually not. A $600 flashing repair on a policy with a $2,500 deductible — or a 1% or 2% wind/hail deductible on a $500,000 house — is a repair, not a claim, and a claim can affect your rate. We'll tell you the repair price first so you can decide.

What's a wind/hail deductible?

Many Idaho policies now carry a separate percentage deductible for wind and hail — 1% or 2% of the dwelling coverage — instead of the flat deductible. On a $450,000 policy that's $4,500 to $9,000, which changes whether a claim makes sense. Check your declarations page before you file; we'll help you read it.

Can you file the claim for me or handle the insurance company?

No. In Idaho a contractor can't act as your adjuster, and we don't take assignments of benefits. You file and you're the client; we document, meet the adjuster, and build. The Idaho Department of Insurance Consumer Affairs line (208-334-4319) is the place for questions about your carrier.

What if the adjuster denies it or lowballs it?

We ask for a re-inspection with our documentation in hand, and most disagreements resolve on the roof with the test squares in front of both parties. If they don't, you can request a different adjuster, use the appraisal clause in your policy, or file a complaint with the Department of Insurance. We don't get paid to fight your carrier; we get paid to build the roof, so our advice is honest about when a claim isn't there.

Will the new roof match my old one?

On a full replacement, everything matches by definition. On a partial approval — one or two slopes — Idaho carriers decide matching case by case; we document the mismatch and request the full roof when the shingle is discontinued.
