Stone-coated steel looks like shake or tile from the street, which is how it gets past an HOA architectural committee in Paramount or Tuscany, and it's the answer for a homeowner who wants metal's life without the look.

Questions we get about metal roofing
Is a metal roof loud in the rain?
Not on a house. The panels go over solid decking and underlayment, with insulation and drywall below, and the sound is no different from shingles. It's loud on an open-rafter shop, which is a different building.
Will a metal roof dent in hail?
Big hail can dent exposed-fastener panels and, rarely, standing seam. The dents are cosmetic, don't leak and are usually excluded from insurance coverage — which is fine, because the roof isn't damaged. Stone-coated steel hides hail better than smooth panels.
Do I need snow guards?
Anywhere the slide would land on something — a front walk, a deck, an AC unit, a gas meter, a neighbor's fence. A metal roof can drop a slope's worth of snow in one slide, and that's a lot of weight.
Can I put metal over my shingles?
Some roofers do. We don't, because it traps moisture, hides bad decking and voids most manufacturer warranties. We tear off, fix the deck and install on clean underlayment.
Will my HOA allow it?
